Okemah, Oklahoma

Okemah is famous for one thing. It is the bithplace of famous songweriter, Woody Guthrie, who wrote such well known songs as ';This Land Is Your Land'; It is fun to be in Okemah during the Woody Guthrie Free Folk Festival in July. The rest of the year, the only attraction is a bronze statue of Guthrie in the downtown park and you can still see some foundation stones of the Guthrie birthplace. The rest of the year you would be bored to tears unless you like Wine and take thetime to visit the Grape Ranch, a local winery which turns out some exceptional vintages. Since you can see the winery, the festival an the statue in two days, Okemah might make an inteesting side trip on yur way to somplace more exiting. Since they widened Main Street and removd all the greenery, a drive downtown will be plain and uninvitineg

Okemah, Oklahoma

I have stayed in Okemah many times and they have a huge lake where you can fish or take your boats. Camping is also available. Even during the summer holidays the lake is not very crowded. If you are looking for a nice lake to camp at where you can have room to move around I would check out the lake in Okemah. They also have a great park just off of Main Street where the kids can play. There is covered picnic tables and the grills are in nice condition and not filthy. Halloween is also celebrated the Saturday before Halloween (if it falls on a week night or Sunday, and on Halloween also, and many houses give out candy and a few churches in town have free festivals. It is not a jumping town but if a place with a slower pace where just about everyone knows each other is what you want then Okemah is for you.
