Looking for a good afternoon activity

I will be traveling to Tulsa the weekend of Sept. 24 to attend the University of Memphis versus Tulsa football game that evening. I am looking for soemthing to do in town during the day before attending the game. All ideas welcome. I will be traveling with one guy, possibly two. We are all around 30. Cultural sites, museums, free things, something that says Tulsa when you see it.

I%26#39;m also interested to know if there are any entertainment districts that would be a good place to go hang out after the game that evening.

Thanks

My first pick would be the Gilcrease Museum, which has a good collection of western/Indian art. Nice setting and a good restuarant, too. www.gilcrease.org

Downtown Tulsa is interesting (and free) if you like architecture. They have a wodnerful collection of art deco buildings. Don%26#39;t miss the Boston Avenue Methodist Church. http://www.michael.leland.name/tulmain.htm

For a little shopping, Tulsa has one of the nation%26#39;s oldest shopping centers, Utica Square, at 21st and Utica. Nice for window shopping and walking under the trees.

Thanks for the response.

You%26#39;re welcome.

You might also consider the Philbrook Museum. Personally, I don%26#39;t care so much for their permanent collection; but they recently underwent a spectacular renovation and have great gardens. Frequently, their visiting exhibits are spectacular. www.philbrook.org

Will you have a car? If so, Bartlesville is about an hour north. Woolaroc is worth a visit, as is the Price Tower, a Frank Lloyd Wright office tower that is now a museum and open for touring. www.woolaroc.org www.pricetower.org

Any restaurant recommendations? I prefer something that is truly local, meaning not a chain. A good lunch place and then also a good after the game place, something that would be open past 10 p.m.

The Utica Square area I mentioned earlier has several restaurants, some of which are local. You can find a list of them here: uticasquare.com/stores/stores-restaurant.htm I highly recommend the Stone Horse Cafe; the Wild Fork is good, too, but its interior is a bit stodgy and its menu far more predicatable. Stone Horse for lunch would be great. Utica Square access is from 21st and Utica streets (just take Utica south from US64 or from I-244).

I also recommend Mezza Mediterranean restaurant on South Peoria. Just what it sounds like and very fresh. It%26#39;s a little more off the beaten path if you%26#39;re going to a football game.

For after the game, you might want to visit what%26#39;s called Cherry Street (which is really 15th Street on the maps). It starts about 15th and Utica and spreads west from there. Lots of restaurants and pubs along there; I%26#39;m sure it will be a happening place. We like to eat at Tucci%26#39;s when we%26#39;re on Cherry, a local Italian place, small but with a nice deck.

I don%26#39;t live in Tulsa, by the way, but I visit several times a year. You%26#39;re getting something of an outsider%26#39;s perspective here; locals might have even better recommendations.

I appreciate your outsider%26#39;s perspective. I am considered the Memphis expert but since I live in Memphis there are some things I don%26#39;t have a good perspective on. Hotels for example. It%26#39;s good that someone is on this forum, whether from Tulsa or not. Maybe if browsers start to see that there is a bit of communication going on they might be willing to post. The Memphis forum used to be somewhat nonexistent and now it has a decent amount of chatter.

Almost too late to post. Everything already said was true, do not miss Cherry Street after the game! I just wanted to tell you that TU has a great tailgating atmosphere before the game, and that is homecoming weekend so there will be food, people, and drinks everywhere, and don%26#39;t worry, we treat our opposing fans well. Anyway I would definetly suggest coming to the game a few hours early. It will be a blast!

I%26#39;m glad I checked back. We will be tailgating. Cherry Street after the game? What can we expect there?

Cherry Street is actually 15th street just to the east of downtown Tulsa. The University of Tulsa is located on 11th street, four miles north and a little to the west. If you go south on Harvard (runs on the east side of the TU campus behind the basketball arena which is behind the visiting stands) and turn right you will reach the Cherry Street district when you cross Lewis Avenue) Two of my favorites for dinner before the game: The Hideaway Pizza (orginally from Stillwater, OK on the north side of Cherry St) and Goldies (amazing grilled burgers and a very reasonable ribeye steak.) Goldies is between Harvard and Yale on 31st St. Tulsa is laid out in a logical grid and folks learn their way around quickly.

That sounds great. Now, and hopefully this won%26#39;t sound shallow or inconsiderate of the coastal regions, but hopefully it won%26#39;t rain too much or at all in Tulsa from Rita hitting the coast Saturday morning.
