HI all... I was hoping you could help me with a few questions. I am looking to move to Oklahoma in the near future. I was wondering if anyone could help me. I was wondering which area is best. i%26#39;m looking at OKC/Norman/Moore areas. I was looking for feed back on neighborhoods and how family friendly the areas are and also how the job situation is there. Can anyone tell me how easy it is to travel around OKC. I currently live in Las Vegas the city is set up pretty easy but the traffic is horrible.
Where to live
First off you can%26#39;t go wrong with Far S. OKC/Moore/Norman area....Norman was just ranked #40 of small cities to live in the U.S by Money magazine.......(Even beat Edmond)...Moore is growing fast and a little closer to the jobs in OKC...If you let us know what your profession is we can let you know where potential jobs might be located
the city is setup easy as well and the traffic is not a problem at all...even the rush hour traffic is nothing to worry about...only problem would be gameday traffic in Norman (OU)
I would just get in touch w/ a realtor who specializes in the area you mentioned and spend a few days scouting neighborhoods...of course you can get a much bigger/better home here since our real estate prices are quite low
Where to live
Easy180 is right - what type of job are you interested in?
With current gas prices I don%26#39;t think you would want to drive 40 or more miles to get to your job every day. I work (and live) far north side of OKC and work with someone that lives in Norman. They bought there because he is an OU grads and had lived in Norman for years and wanted to stay close to his party buddies, and now he is regretting his decision somewhat because of the commute cost.
However, if you work southside OKC, Norman is close enough to make it practical.
The biggest hassle about living in Norman would be game day traffic and congestion in town. But that is limited to 5-6 days a year, so it%26#39;s really not all that bad.
Moore is a great place to live, depending on where you locate in Moore, and so is SW OKC where there has been a lot of development over the past few years - some of it high-end homes. Once again, the issue may be (or become) the distance travelled and the cost of commuting because of gasoline prices.
As a resident of NW OKC, I personally prefer it over the other areas - including Edmond. But usually people that are voluntarily living anywhere think their location is the best - or why would they live there?
Where you decide to live will depend a lot on your specific circumstances. If you have any school-age (or soon to be) children you might want to look at school districts. Then there is the price home you are interested in. And of course the job you are looking to fill and where it may be located. What type of living are you looking for as well? Urban? Suburban? Middle city? These will all affect your decision. When you say you are considering OKC you are covering a lot of ground, while Norman is more suburban and Moore is closer to middle city (IMO).
Easy180 is also right about another big issue - the traffic will be nothing like you are seeing in Vegas. Compared to that, OKC has no traffic. While those that have never driven in really congested traffic may think OKC is bad, compared to most large cities it%26#39;s a breeze.
:)
If you have schools as a concern, Edmond and Deer Creek (W of Edmond) are ranked top two. deer Creek is an affluent area and the kids are quite ';uppity';, from what I understand. I live just north of Edmond in a very small community. My son graduated high school in a class of 27! That may not be to the liking of some people. (I received a package of pictures and school work from my son%26#39;s 1st grade teacher when he graduated! Wouldn%26#39;t find that in a big town) don%26#39;t know what kind of money you want to invest in a house but the cost of living is very reasonable. I think you%26#39;ll like it here.
