Hi,
I%26#39;ve been asked to help organize a weekend hiking trip for a small group of adults ages 35-50. Event is scheduled for end of April or early May. Would like to be within 11/2 hr drive from OKC and really need help in getting started. Would need maps and info on camping, lodging and area attractions.
Thanks,
K.E.
Weekend hiking with group of adults
You don%26#39;t say what kind of terrain or distance you%26#39;re interested in, and Oklahoma isn%26#39;t known for great hiking, but my favorite spot would be Robbers Cave State Park, near Wilburton, but that%26#39;s farther than you requested, about 160 miles east southast of OKC.
You%26#39;ll also find several good trails in the Chickasaw National Recreation Area near Sulphur, which is about 85 miles south of OKC.
A lot of people like the Wichita Mountains area, about 90 miles southwest of OKC. It%26#39;s a very dry climate with lots of rocky outcroppings. It%26#39;s not my favorite area, but like I say, many people enjoy it.
Tell me more about the group, the distance, and the difficulty you%26#39;re interested in; maybe I can give you a little better information.

I have a friend that has hiked to the top of Mt. Scott near Lawton. He enjoyed that hike.
Lot%26#39;s of hiking in Beaver%26#39;s Bend State Park.
Sorry for the slow reply. I%26#39;d also recommend Wichita Mountain Wildlife Refuge. Here%26#39;s the official website:
fws.gov/southwest/refuges/wichitamountains/
As mentioned, it is a dry climate, but nice scenery with spectacular rocky mountains (Small by Rocky Mountain standards, about 2500 feet tall). Wildlife is pretty much guaranteed to include bison, longhorns, and prairie dogs (in the prairie dog towns only, they do not roam). If you are lucky you will see elk, and if you explore the area near Quanah Parker Lake you will probably see some spectacularly-colored Collared Lizard (';Oklahoma State Reptile';) in late April and early May. They have Doris campground, and there are plenty of hotels in Lawton, or B%26amp;Bs throughout the area. A well-known barbecue restaurant in Meers just north of the Refuge.
On Fort Sill, nearby, the Artillery Walk contains samples of historic artillery from all over the world. One weekend day a month, volunteers fire a replica civil war era cannon. There is a decent museum on post, and you can visit historic graves, including that of Geronimo (yes, THAT Geronimo).
The Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge west of Lawton has great hiking. You can contact the Headquarters at the Refuge for details. I would recommend hiking up Elk Mountain, Forty Foot Hole, Boulder Rooms, Apple and the Pear, Post Oak and Treasure Lake Falls. There is a group called ';Friends of the Wichitas'; that might provide a guide. Bill Sheehan took our 4H Group on a STRENOUS hike to Rock Rooms. I wouldn%26#39;t recommend it for 50 year olds. Some of the areas were tight and required agility and ENDURANCE. We came down a 200 foot 75 degree rock face on our bottoms.
Camp Y%26#39;shua owned by Bill Sheehan, out of Cache, OK would quarter that many adults. It is a rustic setting with reasonable accomodations. They have a kitchen for meals. He has canoes, campfire facilities available. There is a ropes course nearby too.
Meers Cafe is notorious for their longhorn burgers. You would have to eat there. They seat 180 people.
