McAlester

What city is nearest McAlester? I%26#39;m trying to compare cost of living with my current town. Thanks.

McAlester

McAlester is one of the the largest Cities in that area of the State.

Of the cities (by size) near McAlester, It%26#39;s about 115 miles to OKC, 93 Miles to Tulsa, 65 miles to Muskogee and 50 miles to Ada .

Are you asking what other towns are close to McAlester?

McAlester

McAlester OK is between Ada and Idabel, north of Paris TX. It is about 2 hrs. SE of Oklahoma City, and about 1 1/2 hrs. south of Tulsa. They have good turnpike highways. I lived there for 8 yrs. It is a very nice place to live; small town feeling, but close enough to big cities when you want that, too. I found everything I needed there.

Shawnee would be a great place close to there also.

From what I can gather it appears McAlester has a population of about 18,000 does that seem right?

If you had to describe McAlester how would you do so?

My hubby has been offered a transfer to his companies plant in McAlester. We had already been planning to move just not to Oklahoma, when his company pitched this offer.

Is there shopping in McAlester, meaning: Target, Kohl%26#39;s, Macy%26#39;s, that sort of thing.......

What are gas prices like currently?

Is the house market there tight, or fast selling?

Oh, and I%26#39;ve been looking for a town paper, I found one, is there more than one, or would home rentals be in the Tulsa paper?

One final question (today) :).....

Would you move to McAlester?

Thanks so much for any help you can offer!

If this is the paper you found: http://www.mcalesternews.com/

that is the only paper in McAlester. And, no, you wouldn%26#39;t probably find rentals for McAlester in the Tulsa papers. But here is a site that has some listings:

There are no large stores of the kind you ask about in Mcalester - you would have to go to OKC or Tulsa for those. However, as someone else said, those towns are 120 and 90 minutes away (respectively).

Gasoline in Oklahoma City runs about $2.65 right now. Not sure about McAlester, but it%26#39;s probably in that range, plus or minus a dime. We typically have some of the lowest price gasoline in the nation.

Home sales in Oklahoma in general are fairly moderate - as are the prices. I imagine McAlester is not a very hot real estate market at any time, but I am not intimately familiar with that market.

And in case you weren%26#39;t aware of it - McAlester is home to Oklahoma%26#39;s largest Penitentiary.

Enjoy the research!

Thanks for all the info! Good to know about the prison....didn%26#39;t know that!

I did some more searching. There is a JC Penney in McAlester (accoding to the Penney%26#39;s web siter). And there is also a Sears in McAlester according to Sears.com.

Of course, there is Walmart.
