Fishing

What kind of fish are the best in Beavers Bend--bass, crappie, trout?I have been told that trout are stocked in the river periodically. When does that happen? What varieties? What the best locations?

We will be arriving Thursday, Nov 15 and leave Sunday, Nov. 18.

Fishing

The designated trout stream is 12 miles long and holds thousands of rainbow and brown trout. The Oklahoma Fish and Game Department stocks nearly 4000 fish every other Thursday. Beavers Bend is a year round fishery located only 3 hours from Dallas/Ft. Worth.

I highly recommend calling the fly shop for information.

What to do near Stillwater, OK??

Hey guys!

We%26#39;re a bunch of international exchange students who are living in Stillwater right now, studying at the OSU.

We%26#39;re looking for things to do in the area like hiking, camping, nice cities, partying, action, adventure... what ever students might want to do!

And we%26#39;re looking for tips for road trips with cars! We%26#39;ve been to Texas, Austin and San Antonio. Next idea might be Denver (Rockies) or around Little Rock in Arkansas. But both is a bit far away for just a weekend, so any ideas??

We want to enjoy our stay here in Oklahoma, but it%26#39;s getting a bit boring...

Check out any of the State Parks (Boiling Springs in the East, Quartz Mountain in the Southwest, or Roman Nose and Alabaster Caverns in the Northwest).

Restaurant for Thanksgiving Dinner

I%26#39;m looking for a place to dine on Thanksgiving. We have a large group--12 adults, 8 children. We would prefer a traditional style meal, but will take what we can get with our large group! Any suggestions?

Restaurant for Thanksgiving Dinner

I have no specific knowledge, but will suggest four places for you to check into.

Soleil Cafe at the historic Colcord Hotel downtown

The historic Skirvin HIlton, also downtown

Marriott Waterford

and Marriott Hotel on Northwest Highway

Best wishes in finding what you need and welcome to Oklahoma!

Restaurant for Thanksgiving Dinner

North Fpork Bar and Grill has an amazing RThanksgiving Day Buffet, they are open from 10-10, and have traditional thanksgiving fare as well an amazing assortment of other treats.

Your biggest problem will be seating 20 people (12 adults, 8 children.)

I have done a search and cannot find anyone advertising Thanksgiving service. However there was a Journal Record story that indicated Tom %26amp; Jerry%26#39;s Steak and Fish will be offering Thanksgiving service, although it%26#39;s not mentioned on their web site.

http://www.tomandjerrysokc.com/

But wherever you go it will be very busy and they will be running late, so be prepared to wait.

OOOPS!!! Sorry. I didn%26#39;t notice it was an old story!! Tom and Jerry%26#39;s is not serving Thanksgiving dinner this year.

My bad.

Steak %26amp; Ale is open. You have two choices for meals. One is a traditional Thanksgiving dinner or a Prime Rib dinner. I do believe you need to make reservations.

Cracker Barrel is having a special Thanksgiving meal and so is Western Sizzlin.

We did Cracker Barrel a few years ago and it wasn%26#39;t bad.

I checked with the Waterford Marriott.

They can handle a party of 20.

Cost:

$38

sr citizen: $30

children 12 - 5: $15

children 4 and under are no charge.

I have eaten Thanksgiving dinner here and it was fine with the exception of something that happened the day before. I hadn%26#39;t thought about this in ages:.

I checked on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving when we checked into the hotel to see if they were going to have any sugar free desserts because one of our family members is a diabetic. They said no, so I drove to a grocery store that night in bitter bitter cold; maybe snowing. I bought some sugar free pudding mixes back and asked the kitchen if they would make them and they said no.

So I then requested room service to send up a quart of milk and a bowl and said I would make them myself.

At that point whoever I was talking to jerked the boxes out of my hand and disgustedly stalked to the kitchen.

But...the puddings appeared the next day in lovely bowls with pretty garnishes. We actually had a nice time there and laughed about the ';pudding triumph.';

Wow! That%26#39;s some story. They literally jerked the boxes from your hands? Amazing!!!

But it sounds as if they made up for it and you had a great dinner.

I hope redheadedtwins06 has as much luck!

Yes, ModCon, literally jerked the boxes from my hand. And yes, in spite of that incident, we had a great time at dinner.

I should note that the Waterford at that time was not managed by Marriott.

And just to bring things up to date, I called the Waterford to see if they have sugar-free desserts this year.

I talked to a nice man named Todd who checked with the chef and told me that they would have sugar-free desserts, but they would not be on the buffet; rather they would be kept in the kitchen and available on request. I asked why they would not be put out on the buffet and he said because they would quickly be consumed.

  • Cross Country Trip–Feedback on Route? (Updated/Reposted)

Based on feedback that I have received from fellow TA travelers, I have adjusted this schedule and wanted to re-post for additional feedback. I apologize for the long post (and posting it in multiple places). Not sure where to post something like this. In early April of 2008, I will start a three-week journey driving from Raleigh, NC ending in Sacramento, CA. I have bought a book called “120 Scenic Drives in America” and I am using this to help guide my route. The real purpose of the trip is to see the country, significant points of interest along the way, and just get away.

Below is what I have laid out– and is subject to additional change based on my fellow TA’s advice. I have attempted to split it up to drive around 200 miles/day. The places that seem a bit strange to stop are those places along my routes that have a TA highly rated place to stay that are in my price range (~$100/night). I frequent Hampton Inns and that class of hotel. I will need internet connectivity along the way as I will be working some. If you know of a “must see” close to my route, please let me know.

Any input or advice on my journey would be very much appreciated. I am very open to your suggestions – I have received awesome advice from you guys thus far.

Day 1: Raleigh, NC to Lewisburg, WV. One of the “scenic drives”, the Midland Trail, starts in White Sulphur Springs, WV to and goes to Charleston, WV. 244 miles.

Day 2: Lewisburg, WV to Morehead, KY. Finishes the Midland Trail. 225 miles.

Day 3: Morehead, KY to Cave City, KY. Route includes the “Bluegrass to Pennroyal” drive. 239 miles.

Day 4: Cave City, KY to Metropolis, IL. Finish the “Bluegrass to Pennroyal” drive and get a little gambling in Metropolis. 184 miles.

Day 5: Metropolis, IL to Mt. Vernon, IL via the “Shawnee Hills Scenic Byway” along the IL/KY border. 155 miles.

Day 6: Mt. Vernon, IL to Jefferson City, MO. Will start the “Missouri Rhineland” drive. 221 miles.

Day 7: Jefferson City, MO to Topeka, KS. 221 miles.

Day 8: Topeka, KS to Oklahoma City, OK. 285 miles.

Day 9: Oklahoma City, OK to Amarillo, TX. 275 miles.

Day 10: Amarillo, TX Raton, NM. 215 miles. (Via Clayon, NM to start one of the scenic drives along northern NM.)

Day 11: Raton, NM to Santa Fe, NM. 167 miles. (May stay in Albuquerque instead).

Day 12: Santa Fe, NM to Winslow, AZ. 325 miles.

Day 13 and 14: Winslow, AZ to Sedona, AZ. For two nights. (via Camp Verde). 149miles.

Day 15: Sedona, AZ to Williams, AZ early to catch the steam train to see the GC. 61 miles.

Day 16: Williams, AZ to Las Vegas, NV. Via “Route 66”. 217 miles.

Day 17: Las Vegas, NV to Stovepipe Wells, CA. 152 miles.

Day 18 Stovepipe Wells, CA to Mammoth Lake or Lee Vining, CA. 180 miles.

Day 19 and 20: Mammoth Lake or Lee Vining, CA to S. Lake Tahoe. For two nights. 138 miles.

Day 21: S. Lake Tahoe to Sacramento, CA. 110 miles.

Day 22: Fly back to NC.

Cross Country Trip%26ndash;Feedback on Route? (Updated/Reposted)

    Hi, Wincherr,

I saw your post on the Taos board and evidently you have made some changes based on their recommendations. Of the areas I know, you have made some improvements.

    Two comments:

    1. the drive from Clayton to Santa Rosa is one of my favorites ---but you better like New Mexico ranch country to agree with me. :%26lt;)) We take a short cut from the east side of Amarillo. Post back if you are interested - might not work with your hotel plans.

    2. If would be a real shame, IMHO, for you to drive so far and miss the city of Santa Fe.

I just must ask: are you sure you want to do that much driving every day??? That sounds rather exhausting to me -- twenty-one straight days of driving four to five hours.

And, have you been to the West before? I personally think the endless vistas and rolling hills of the prairie are absolutely beautiful, but you will have a lot of that, and if it%26#39;s not what you are expecting, it could prove to seem to be monotonous to you.

In any case, this sounds like a wonderful adventure. I sincerely hope you will post trip reports. Best of luck in planning and travelling!

Cross Country Trip%26ndash;Feedback on Route? (Updated/Reposted)

2.5 to 3 hours a day driving doesn%26#39;t seem too bad to me. Even with stops for gas, food and breaks, it still won%26#39;t be more than 3.5 hours (except the Topeka to OKC leg.) And from the way you%26#39;ve stated it, there will be long breaks on ech leg.

It sounds ambitious, and overall it is a long drive. But it also sounds like fun the way you are planning to do it.

    Good luck!

Thanks for your feedback Sofibella. I would be interested in that shortcut - I haven%26#39;t made any hotel reservations. I do plan to over night in Santa Fe.

I have been to the West Coast - but never the plain states. I decided when planning this trip that I had rather drive 4 hours every day than drive 8 hours and skip a day.

    Again, thanks!

Oh, I see this itinerary lists a night in Santa Fe. Sorry! Perhaps I was going off your previous itinerary.

As for the Amarillo shortcut:, if you wish to overnight in Amarillo, it might not be what you want to do, as the nicer hotel areas are on the west side of the city.

It%26#39;s just one suggestion for you to consider.

What works for us in driving to Santa Fe is to spend the night in Dalhart instead of Amarillo (as far as distance and hours are concerned).

I will post the cut-off highway numbers and directions after I consult with my husband. He is the navigator in the family. :%26lt;)

Please forgive me: the cut-off does not apply to your route to Santa Fe. I was confused: thinking of the route we take to Colorado Springs. I am so sorry and embarrassed.

If I haven%26#39;t lost total credibility, you might enjoy a scenic drive from I-40 to SF instead of turning north at Clines Corner.

Again, need to confer with husband for exact info.

    Again, my apologies!

You%26#39;ll find almost nothing between OKC and Amarillo, unless you are a fan of Route 66. And, IMHO, Amarillo is a place not to stay unless you have to. I would suggest heading on toward Clayton, where you will find a wonderful old hotel, the Eklund http://www.theeklund.com/ This would give you a head start on the scenic drive in northern NM.

I would then by-pass Raton and either spend a night in Taos or head into Santa Fe early. By driving a long day out of OKC, you could add some time in NM. And trust me: western OK and the TX panhandle don%26#39;t offer a lot of scenic or historic diversions. Personally, I would much rather drive a long day to have more time in north central NM than meander across the great spaces between El Reno and Clayton.

Thanks TwoProfs. I am reworking my schedule in this area so your timing was great. I will take your advice and repost in a few weeks.

    Hello, again,

Here are the details on the scenic drive I mentioned.

East of Clines Corner where we usually turn north to Santa Fe is a state highway going to Ribera.

We went this way on one occasion and thoroughly enjoyed the scenery. It%26#39;s a rather winding road; crosses the Pecos River three times; offers many picturesque vistas; and gives you a wonderful view of rural New Mexico.

In the village of Ribera is a cafe I recommend: La Risa. We had a delightful lunch there on the patio. We appeared to be the only tourists - lots of locals. A pleasant time and a great contrast to the Santa Fe experience.

    elvalle.com/larisa/

I would like for a local to confirm the following as my map is hard to read with certainty: I believe it is State Highway 3; Exit 230; twelve miles before the Clines Corner; it forks and you would take the northwest fork to Ribera.

You would then pick up I25 and head west to Santa Fe.

    Have a wonderful time!

    Thanks SofiBella!

A few recommendations for things to see along your route:

    (1) Between Topeka and Oklahoma City stop at the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve for an hour or so. It%26#39;s off the freeway a few miles. The most beautiful rolling grassland you can imagine.

    (2) Near Amarillo go to Palo Duro Canyon State Park. A mini-grand canyon well worth seeing.

    (3) Between Amarillo and Raton, visit Capulin Mountain which is an old extinct volcano, and then take the back road from Folsom to Raton across Johnson Mesa. Great scenery, remote area.

April is the month that the Ocotillo blooms in the deserts of southern Arizona. A lovely orange bloom. April is probably the best month to visit the desert. Tucscon and the Saguaro National Monument are probably the best places to go.

I would go to the Arizona desert rather than Lake Tahoe and Sacramento. Too cold in April at Tahoe and California is overcrowded. Fly back to NC from Tucson or Phoenix

    Turner Falls area

Will be attending a training in the Turner Falls area/ Chickasaw Recreation area - any good choices for hotels, bed and breakfasts or restaurants?

    Turner Falls area

I have heard good things about Echo Canyon, though I have not been there personally. http://www.echocanyonmanor.com/

Road trip from Memphis to Hutchinson Kansas

We want to drive from Memphis to Hutchinson in Kansas with only 1 overnight stop. Can anyone suggest a nice town to stop that is kind of half way. We don%26#39;t mind driving more than half way if it means reaching a nicer town to stop in.

I%26#39;m assuming the best half way stop for us would be after we get over the Arkansas border into Oklahoma (assuming we take the interestate 40 through Arkansas).

Any suggestions at all for driving routes would be appreciated. We are coming from Australia so have no idea other than what i can find on the internet which isn%26#39;t as good as personal recommendations!

Road trip from Memphis to Hutchinson Kansas

I think you will want to take Interstate 40 into Oklahoma, the Muskogee Turnpike to Tulsa, US 412 to Interstate 35, which will get you as far as Wichita. The whole trip is a little over 600 miles.

Van Buren, Arkansas, just east of the Oklahoma border, is a picturesque little town; it%26#39;s just under half way. Muskogee has few things to recommend it, other than a small museum dedicated to the American Indian tribes of the region. Personally, I would go on to Tulsa, where you will find better accommodations, better restaurants, and a couple of very fine museums.

Road trip from Memphis to Hutchinson Kansas

Thanks i was thinking Tulsa. But can anyone recommend where we could stay that is close to restaurants/nightlife etc also?

The Ambassador Hotel is undoubtedly Tulsa%26#39;s nicest hotel. It has a very nice restaurant in house, and it%26#39;s close to Cherry Street, which has lots of other unique places for dinner and later. http://www.hotelambassador-tulsa.com/

Urban Tulsa Weekly has lots of good information about what%26#39;s going on. www.urbantulsa.com

I strongly recommend that you take a little time to visit Tulsa%26#39;s Gilcrease Museum, which has a great collection of art from the American West. www.gilcrease.org

    Tex Mex in Tulsa

I%26#39;m from Tulsa but haven%26#39;t spent time there in 18 years, so I need help! Chimi%26#39;s used to be the spot to eat great tex-mex. Are there any new, fun, hip Mex Tex spots?? Is Chimi%26#39;s still good?? I%26#39;ll be there next Thursday night for a family dinner and I want good tex-mex...not a lot of that here in Minneapolis!

    Tex Mex in Tulsa

Abuelo%26#39;s, on 71st, just east of Hwy 169 is very good. It%26#39;s a large place, noisy and busy. Haven%26#39;t eaten at Chimi%26#39;s in years, but agree that it was once quite good. There%26#39;s another place in the Brookside area that has been there for a few years and is also good. Have only eaten there once, and can%26#39;t remember what it%26#39;s called. Maybe someone else can name it.

    Tex Mex in Tulsa

Best newcomer is El Guapo, downtown. Owned by the son from Nelson%26#39;s (long since closed), who also owns McNellies (great burgers %26amp; beer, also downtown). Definitely worth a visit.

I tend to stay away from national chains. Best ';local'; chain is Mexicali, with several locations (downtown %26amp; also 71st %26amp; Sheridan are 2 I%26#39;ve frequented).

Senor Tequila%26#39;s is another ';local'; chain, which has a couple of locations in town. Mexican owned %26amp; operated; you%26#39;ll find Mexican soccer on TV in the bar all the time.

I used to go to Chimi%26#39;s a lot, but got tired of it even tho it%26#39;s only 2 blocks from my home. I%26#39;m sure it%26#39;s still pretty good, just hasn%26#39;t changed probably since you lived here (except it did move to the corner of 15th %26amp; Peoria since you were last here).

All the above have very good food %26amp; it%26#39;s hard to mess up a margarita so long as you get one with 100% agave tequila.

The Brookside restaurant is Cafe Ole, 35th %26amp; Peoria. Also very good + an outside deck with heaters, in case it%26#39;s a nice day/evening when you%26#39;re there. Small %26amp; intimate. Good food.

    Please Help

We are scheduled to move from Louisville to Oklahoma in spring 2008 and we want to know what are the bad parts of Oklahoma? Also are there any good truck driving jobs in the state. I need to know what is the crime rate? I have alot to learn in the next 7 months.

    Please Help

Well, this is a travel forum, as opposed to a moving forum. And Oklahoma is a big place.

You need to check the internet for resources specific to the city/town in Oklahoma you are thinking of moving to,

    :)

    Please Help

anthony-- when you travel to Oklahoma in a few months there are only a few pockets mainly in the big cities that are really anything to worry about. For the most part people are friendly and helpful and this is a long ways from your most crime riddled state. The roads are heavy with truck traffic so I would expect there are jobs from short haul to nationwide. Checking out individual cities is a good idea. There is just tons of information available on the web for just about every one.

Good luck on your Oklahoma adventure.

Here is southeast Oklahoma there are a couple large trucking companies and it is the pretties part of the state and cost of living is very cheap. The two trucking companies are Jimmy Tucker Trucking and Daryl Thomason Trucking in Broken Bow. There are also lots of truck driving jobs in the timber industry.

    Welcome to Oklahoma!

Contact Oklahoma Trucking Association, a trade association, oktrucking.com. They should be able to refer you to employment information in the industry.

Good luck with your research and move!

There are lots of trucking jobs in Oklahoma. Oklahoma in general is in a boom right now because of oil, plus we haven%26#39;t been hit as hard by the real estate downturn as the rest of the nation.

Oklahoma is a varied state. The western half is prairie, flatter, a few rolling hills, with SW Oklahoma being somewhat arid. I grew up out there and I think there is a special beauty to the country. The eastern half is pretty too because there%26#39;s lots more trees and more hills. There%26#39;s actually a national forest in SE Oklahoma.

As far as places to avoid, I don%26#39;t think there is one. I%26#39;m sure that there are good and bad neighborhoods to each town, but a local real estate agent can direct you in that area. You will find that Oklahomans are good, decent people, friendly and will help out in times of trouble.

Welcome to the best state in the union!

    Anthony,

What jodiebo said, People here are great! You will like it! You didn%26#39;t say where you are moving to in Oklahoma. Oklahoma City and Tulsa, both have several trucking companies. Hobby Lobby Inc. Corporate offices are located here in Okla City. They have their own trucking company within the corporation. They are always looking for drivers. You may want to check their website. I have 2 homes in the Okla City area for sale right now. It is a buyers market here. You can get a lot of house for your money. Best Wishes!

Dowtown is spotty...Edmond is nice, but somewhat pricey. By the airport to the south is nice. Moore area. I lived there for 7 years, in 3 different areas. I rented a house by Lake Heffner...very nice...downtown in a highrise...that was ok...and had a house on the south side at May and 96th st. Nice area. Crime overall is not bad. Don%26#39;t know about trucking jobs. I work for an airline.

It%26#39;s been a tradition in our family to celebrate our wedding anniversary together as a family. We live in Tulsa and have stayed at various hotels. Our children enjoy swimming and my husband HAS to have a whirlpool/hot tub.

22 years of marriage. We can afford a nicer hotel, but since it%26#39;s January, we aren%26#39;t too keen on planning a stay too far outside of Tulsa for fear of ugly weather.

Any ideas for AWESOME hotels/ cabins with family in mind?

    Thanks!!!

    Family celebrates anniversary together WHERE?

In Tulsa, my favorite for a weekend getaway is the Renaissance Hotel at 71st %26amp; Hwy 169. They have a nice big indoor pool, hot tub and sauna. The Renaissance is the only AAA 4-Diamond rated hotel in Tulsa and its restaurant, The Cyprus Grille, is also very good.

If you are up to a road trip, consider trying the Great Wolf Lodge in Kansas City, KS, or Grapevine, TX (http://www.greatwolflodge.com). These are part of a chain of all-suite hotels with a north-woods theme that feature indoor water parks. There is also the Grand Country Resort (http://www.grandcountry.com) in Branson that features its own indoor water park called Splash Country.

Restaurants around medical complex 13th and Lincoln

In about a week, I will be traveling from Tulsa to the medical complex at 13th and Lincoln in Oklahoma City for an appointment.

I%26#39;m planning on eating lunch in OKC. I%26#39;ve noticed in the past there do not seem to be many restaurants/places to eat near the medical complex.

As I will arriving on the Turner Turnpike in north OKC would my best bet be to eat somewhere in the north part of OKC? Then drive to the medical complex. Or, are there good places to eat around the medical complex that I just haven%26#39;t found yet?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Restaurants around medical complex 13th and Lincoln

You%26#39;re less than 1.5 miles to the heart of Bricktown, where you will find all sorts of restaurants. Abuelo%26#39;s, for example, is at 17 E. Sheridan Avenue. If you type that into Google Maps, you%26#39;ll see right where it is; many other places are in the area. Sheridan intersects with Lincoln, about a mile south of the medical center. http://www.bricktownokc.com/

Restaurants around medical complex 13th and Lincoln

If you follow those directions to Bricktown, it will take you close to absolutely the best barbeque in town:

    Leo%26#39;s Bar-B-Que

    7 Harrison Ave.

    OKC

I%26#39;ve been to some of the Bricktown places. They%26#39;re good -- but Leo%26#39;s is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. DON%26#39;T miss the chance to try their ribs !!! I%26#39;m all the way up in Ohio and I still miss those ribs.............

    Okemah, Oklahoma

Okemah is famous for one thing. It is the bithplace of famous songweriter, Woody Guthrie, who wrote such well known songs as ';This Land Is Your Land'; It is fun to be in Okemah during the Woody Guthrie Free Folk Festival in July. The rest of the year, the only attraction is a bronze statue of Guthrie in the downtown park and you can still see some foundation stones of the Guthrie birthplace. The rest of the year you would be bored to tears unless you like Wine and take thetime to visit the Grape Ranch, a local winery which turns out some exceptional vintages. Since you can see the winery, the festival an the statue in two days, Okemah might make an inteesting side trip on yur way to somplace more exiting. Since they widened Main Street and removd all the greenery, a drive downtown will be plain and uninvitineg

    Okemah, Oklahoma

I have stayed in Okemah many times and they have a huge lake where you can fish or take your boats. Camping is also available. Even during the summer holidays the lake is not very crowded. If you are looking for a nice lake to camp at where you can have room to move around I would check out the lake in Okemah. They also have a great park just off of Main Street where the kids can play. There is covered picnic tables and the grills are in nice condition and not filthy. Halloween is also celebrated the Saturday before Halloween (if it falls on a week night or Sunday, and on Halloween also, and many houses give out candy and a few churches in town have free festivals. It is not a jumping town but if a place with a slower pace where just about everyone knows each other is what you want then Okemah is for you.

  • Good Hotel Near Will Rogers Int'l. Airport

In your opinion, which hotels would be the most affordable but bug free places to stay near Will Rogers Int%26#39;l. Airport? We also need shuttle service for an early morning flight. After reading through some of these reviews, I%26#39;m very worried about picking one myself.

Thank you in advance for your help! :)

Good Hotel Near Will Rogers Int'l. Airport

I have stayed in the Holiday Inn Express, the Hilton Garden Inn, and the Embassy Suites. All are near the airport and very nice, but I%26#39;m not sure if they have airport shuttles or not. The Sheraton Four Point is right next to the airport and definitely runs a shuttle, but it%26#39;s an older property which could stand some extensive updating; still, it%26#39;s always clean and quite safe. ';Affordable'; is a subjective test, so perhaps you could provide a dollar amount.

Good Hotel Near Will Rogers Int'l. Airport

    Thanks for the info!

I had been told the Four Points Sheraton was a good pick, but I was really hoping to find something in the $70-$85 range. I had a reservation at the Clarion until I read the review here that mentioned the bed bugs!

I%26#39;ve gotten the Four Points for that price range before. In the $80 range, it%26#39;s an OK buy. Like I said, it%26#39;s an adequate place, but nothing fancy. But if I%26#39;m going to have to pay more than $80, I would seriously be looking at the Hilton Garden or the Hyatt Place, both of which are nearly new.

After reading some of the reviews of the Four Points, I went ahead and booked a room at the La Quinta. It sounded like the lesser of all evils. I%26#39;ll let you know how it turns out!

    Thanks again for your help!

    Sunday brunch recommendation needed, please

I would like to have a suggestion for Sunday brunch in Oklahoma City. Preferably in the Penn Square down to Midtown area.

There will be three adults. Need a nice and relatively calm place for conversation.

    Thanks for all advice.

    Sunday brunch recommendation needed, please

La Baguette on North May (about 70th, iirc) has an excellent brunch.

    Sunday brunch recommendation needed, please

La Baguette sounds perfect. Thanks, Twoprofs!

They have a nice variety of well-prepared foods, most with a French flair, of course. It%26#39;s always busy, but never loud, when I%26#39;ve been there. Menu on their web site at http://www.labaguettebistro.com/.

The Art Museum cafe also has Sunday Brunch, though I have never eaten there for brunch (dinners are excellent, though). http://www.okcmoa.com/Default.aspx?p=7475

Something in my memory tells me that your name sake, Sophabella%26#39;s, also has a brunch that%26#39;s supposed to be good.

Two more excellent ideas. Thanks, twoprofs.

I can%26#39;t remember how long it has been since I%26#39;ve had brunch in Oklahoma City. Ages and ages.

So....I was drawing a total blank. Thanks for your help!

I had brunch at Sophabella%26#39;s last summer and it was most excellent.

I had a most excellent dinner last evening at Cafe do Brasil which, I noticed, has a Saturday and Sunday brunch on their menu. 11th street just off of Walker.

    http://www.cafedobrazilokc.com/

    Thanks, modcon and two profs.

Unfortunately my husband did not feel well upon awakening this morning so we had to cancel the brunch and come home.

Thanks for your suggestions. All very good information for the next time!

    Hotels on Memorial

Can anyone refresh my feeble memory on hotels on Memorial?

I need to be at Mercy Monday and snow is forecast, so I am thinking of coming in Sunday.

I am looking for the best rate among the Springhill Suites (just learned it is no longer an Amerisuites) and Fairfield Inn types. The Springhill%26#39;s hospital rate is $99. I am wondering if I can find a better rate.

    Many thanks!

    Hotels on Memorial

Go to Travelocity%26#39;s ';Hotels'; page; you%26#39;ll see a ';search by address'; option at the bottom of the little orange box. This takes you to a new, white page. Type in Mercy%26#39;s address and voila, Travelocity will show you what%26#39;s closest.

Hope things go well for you at Mercy.

    Hotels on Memorial

    Thanks, twoprofs!

I don%26#39;t know if this is too late or not, but the hotels I%26#39;ve been able to locate on Memorial are:

Spring Hill Suites 3201 W Memorial Rd

La Quinta Inn and Suites Quail Springs 3003 W. Memorial Road

Courtyard by Marriott 13511 Highland Park Drive,

    Hampton Inn 13500 Plaza Ter

Comfort Inn and Suites 13501 N Highland Park Blvd

The closest to Mercy would be the Amerisuites and the La Quita Inn and Suites. The rest are closer to Quail Springs Mall.

I hope everything goes well with the hospital situation.

    Thanks, modcon.

    Much appreciated information.

Thanks to both of you for your good wishes!

  • Our Broken Bow visit at Christmas

We had a wonderful time at the State Park right before Christmas. We stayed at Lakeview Lodge, and pretty much had the place to ourselves. It was cold but beautiful. The water vapor coming off the lake was a pretty sight. We visited the museum in the park, ate out, went on hikes on the trails and just enjoyed the beauty of the area. We saw many deer and a large coyote while driving or hiking.

We ate at Abendigos, which was very upscale for this area, and also at El Senorial, which had excellent and inexpensive Mexican food.

For Mountain bikers and trail runners, the trails next the Lakeview Lodge were very nice and well marked. The backside is challenging (well, they were for me!)

Our Broken Bow visit at Christmas

glad you enjoyed your trip here bktx1. You need to visit in the summer. Lots of fun floating the Mountain Fork River.

    Alcohol at the casinos

Ok, I know Choctaw Durant and WinStar don%26#39;t serve alcohol, so that is not the question.

I do tend to enjoy having some adult beverages while doing my gambling, though.

Do the restaurants at Choctaw Durant serve alcohol?

Is there a problem (not socially or personally, thank you : ) with doing some discreet ';tailgating'; and having a beer or two before going into the gaming facilities?

Any other suggestions ideas or experiences?

    Alcohol at the casinos

the will probably get you for loiter or drinking in public.

    Alcohol at the casinos

Riverwind Casino on I-35 just south of Norman (about 100 miles north of the Red) has several bars. It has a far more Lasvegas feel about in than many Oklahoma casinos.

  • college visit

My 16 yr old daughter and I will be visiting ORU from CT in Feb. Any suggestions on inexpensive hotels that are safe and clean? We are leaning toward the Baymont.

Also, We will have 2 days to explore the area...any suggestions for things to do and places to eat? Is Oklahoma City worth the trip to see?

    college visit

As for things to do, Tulsa has two very nice museums, Philbrook and Gilcrease. Things to see in OKC would include the Cowboy Hall of Fame and the OKC Bombing Memorial. OKC is about a two hour drive from Tulsa on the I-44 toll road. Nearer to Tulsa is the Will Rogers museum in Claremore and Woolaroc, a western art and artifacts museum located at the country home and ranch of Frank Phillips, the founder of Phillips Petroleum Company, between the towns of Barnsdall and Bartlesville. Also in Bartlesville, is the Price Tower Arts Center, housed in the Price Tower - the only skycraper ever built by Frank Lloyd Wright.

I can%26#39;t really help you out on accomodations or dining options, without knowing more about what you are looking for in terms of cost and other specifics.

    college visit

If you make it to OKC(Oklahoma City), you may want to check out our newest historical museum, The Oklahoma History Center. It just opened last year and is said to have Smithsonian quality exhibits. It is on my list of places to visit, but I have not made it there yet. Admission is only $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for students, so it certainly is affordable too! Check it out at www.okhistorycenter.org/ and have a good visit!

For activities you might try the Oklahoma Aquarium, just West of the Arkansas River Bridge going into Jenks (around 96th St., just a couple miles South of ORU). There are also a couple of new shopping/dining areas on both sides of the river, the most popular of which is probably River Walk Crossing on the West side, just North of the river bridge.

For the typical shopping mall experience, you can wander around Woodland Hills Mall @ 71st %26amp; Memorial. If it%26#39;s a nice day, you can walk around the up-scale Utica Square shopping area, at 21st %26amp; Utica Ave.

Another couple of fun areas to look for eclectic stores %26amp; places to eat are the Cherry Street area, on 15th Street between Peoria and Utica, and the Brookside area, on Peoria Ave. between 33rd %26amp; 51st.

Other posts have covered the Gilcrease %26amp; Philbrook Museums in Tulsa and the Oklahoma City bombing memorial--all good choices.

For church on Sunday you might drop in on Asbury United Methodist Church, relatively new (last couple years) location @ 68th %26amp; Mingo (near Woodland Hills Mall area)--large church, lots of activities, growing young adult programs.

    nightlife in Oklahoma City

We will be in OKC the weekend of March 7th. We like country music and dancing. Is there a country bar anyone would recommend??

    Thanks (dd68522 at yahoo.com)

    nightlife in Oklahoma City

Try the Wormy Dog Saloon in Bricktown. Bricktown is very close to downtown, and is the best part of OKC for entertainment. There are hotels, bars and restaurants, all in a small, walkable area. The Wormy Dog tends to feature ';outlaw';(or ';progressive'; or ';alternative';, depending on the adjective you prefer) country acts, rather than the dull country-pop you hear on the radio.

    Bricktown Hotels

We will be in OK City for a couple of nights next week. What is a graet place to stay that is in walking distance of all the cool restaraunts and stuff?

    Thanks!

    Bricktown Hotels

In Bricktown, the Courtyard is newish, nice, near everything. But if you%26#39;re willing to go a few blocks out of Bricktown and use the shuttle bus or hike a bit farther, the Colcord and the Skirvin (both of which are old places which have been recently refurbished) are much more unique properties for not much more money.

    Bricktown Hotels

We stayed last March at the Residence Inn right on the canal. I posted my review and a couple of pictures too.

The Skirvin and the Colcord are indeed better than the Courtyard, but the poster makes it sound like they are a good distance further away, and that%26#39;s not really accurate. All the downtown hotels are in easy walking distance to Bricktown. The only exception being if you are elderly, but there is a Trolley that runs back and forth if that%26#39;s the case. All the downtown hotels are in great condition and you really can%26#39;t go wrong w/ any of them.

    Courtyard Downtown/Bricktown

    Renaissance

    Skirvin Hilton

    Residence Inn Bricktown

    Sheraton Downtown

    2 days in OK City

    Hi all.

    Just 2 quick questions.

    1) I will have 2 days (17-18 May) spare before joining a storm chasing tour and I was wondering what to do and what not to do. Any ideas?

    2) Are there any areas of OK City you don%26#39;t recommend taking a stroll through? I will be probably staying at the airport Holiday Inn. Is it safe to go for a stroll in this area?

    Thanks for the assistance.

    Eddievan

    2 days in OK City

What are your interests? It might help to direct you to things you would like if you let us know. :)

As for the area, there isn%26#39;t a whole lot to walk to or see around that hotel. Not sure I would want to just stroll around the area, although you aren%26#39;t all that far from a walking/biking trail end on the Oklahoma River (About 1/3 mile.) I haven%26#39;t been on the trails in that area, but if you are walking them by day it should be fine.

    https://www.okc.gov/trails/n_canadian.html

Post more about what you might want to see and I%26#39;m sure there will be a lot of suggestions.

But in general, in the downtown area (about 1 mile north and 5 miles east of the hotel) there is Bricktown (http://www.bricktownokc.com/), the Oklahoma City Museum of Art(http://www.okcmoa.com/), The OKC National Memorial Museum (Murrah Bombing) (http://www.oklahomacitynationalmemorial.org/), along with other things to see.

And north of your location (about 15 miles or so total distance) is the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum http://www.nationalcowboymuseum.org/).

    2 days in OK City

I agree with modcon. You probably CAN stroll near the airport Holiday Inn, but why would anyone WANT to? It%26#39;s just a strip of business spread out along large parking lots.

Why would you be staying there? It would make more sense, if you%26#39;re wanting to stroll and learn something about Oklahoma City, for you to stay in the downtown or Bricktown areas.

I very much agree with modcon and twoprofs. I really really hope you can stay somewhere else.

The Bricktown/downtown area would really be nice for you.

Another area to consider is the northwest highway corridor....more or less Classen west to west of May. It%26#39;s more suburban with some nice mid-range hotels, restaurants, a good shopping center, and reasonably easy drives to the National Heritage Museum and downtown to Bricktown, OKC Museum of Art, the OKC memorial, and other attractions. You would need a car.

Please post back and let us know if you are locked into the HI or not.

Oops. I should have written National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum. Got in a hurry. Modcon gave you the website. Sorry.

I agree that you should try to stay in downtown or Bricktown if you want to walk to places of interest, but if you do choose the Meridian Corridor (airport hotels), there is a trolley that will take you to downtown for cheap (around $1 I believe), and you can walk to a lot of things from there.

  • restaurant in central tulsa

need a decent restaurant near the fairfield inn at 3214 S 79th

    thanks

    restaurant in central tulsa

Best grilled burgers in town, about 2 miles away:

    Goldie%26#39;s

    2115 S Garnett

    Tulsa, OK

    (918) 438-6530

    restaurant in central tulsa

Of course, it all depends on how you define ';decent';, and I agree that Goldie%26#39;s has good burgers, but if you want something nicer, you are probably going to have to go a little further. Utica Square is not terribly far from there (maybe 5 or 6 miles) and there are a few good restaurants there. I recommend either the Polo Grill or the Wild Fork. There are also some chains, like PF Changs and Olive Garden. In that general vicinity is also a McGill%26#39;s restaurant, for pretty good steaks and all-round menu. Downtown is a bit further away, but The Chalkboard, which is one of my Tulsa favorites, is there in the Ambassador Hotel. Two other areas to look into are the Cherry Street area (15th Street between S Lewis Ave and S Utica Ave) and Brookside (S Peoria St between E 31st St and I-44). Both these areas have several restaurants that I would define as ';decent'; and a fair amount of nightlife.

There is an Outbeak Steak House on Yale between 41st and 51st Street and a Steak and Ale on 61st Street (I think between Sheraton and Yale). Another nice restaurant is Charlestons. There are two locations. One on Peoria between 31st and 41st and another on Yale at 71st (I think). The Warren Duck Club at the Doubletree Hotel at Yale and 61st is also very nice.

Goldies is good for a local hamburger joint. We also like Peppers at Utica Square (all types of food), El Paso BBQ and there is a good Mexican resturant on Utica near the Charleston%26#39;s. For inexpensive Italian try Zio%26#39;s (two locations -- one on Lewis and one on 71st street).

    Hope this helps.

I live in tulsa...so lets see...the Fairfield inn is off 71st?...so..Texas Roadhouse (awesome steaks) off 71st...Pew Wei Asian Diner is my fav! Its off 71st near Mingo. I really like The flying Roll...but that is off memorial between 41st and 51st..awesome home cooking. Good BBQ is...off Peoria called Elmers BBQ..its the best in town!..Hope this helps!

  • Top 3 attractions in state

I%26#39;m having a very difficult time figuring out what there is to do in Oklahoma. I%26#39;m going to be in OKC later this month and will have time to see that city. I want to leave the city for a day and am willing to travel anywhere in the state to find something great to do.

Any suggestions on what the must see or must do attractions in the state are? I don%26#39;t want to spend the day in museums or shopping. Are there any can%26#39;t be missed national or state parks? Are there any other fantastic natural attractions?

I%26#39;m up for anything but just can%26#39;t figure out what%26#39;s out there. The tourism and state websites all seem to be painstakingly broken down in to small regions and I don%26#39;t want to search through every one of those. I just want a list of the best things to do.

    Please help.

    Top 3 attractions in state

    Turner Falls is cool. Beaver Bend%26#39;s State Park is very scenic -- I haven%26#39;t been there, though. (I live in Texas.) Antlers is the ';deer capital of Oklahoma.';

I%26#39;ve stayed at a couple of the state park ';resorts'; -- Sequoya and Lake Murray.

For a day trip, I%26#39;ll bet you%26#39;d really like Turner Falls. I took some pictures there once and my friends in Ohio thought it was Hawaii. They didn%26#39;t believe Oklahoma would have such scenic falls!

    Top 3 attractions in state

I would drive over highway 1 and check the folliage out around Big Cedar.

Take a trip to Tulsa. It%26#39;s a great city as well and is totally different from Oklahoma City. Only 2 hr drive.

You could go to Lawton to the wildlife refuge. Make sure you eat at Meers. One of the best hamburgers in the state.

Drive down to Turner Falls and Arbuckle Mountains.

Also, drive south to Norman, or north to Stillwater and check out the state%26#39;s two main universities.

    Just some ideas!

I would suggest that you visit the Aquarium in Jenks, Oklahoma. This aquarium has a great shark tank that you can walk through and is one of the top 10 in the U.S. Jenks is near Tulsa, very easy to find and in a beautiful location by a river. If you are staying in Oklahoma City it is less than a 90 minute drive up the senic Turner Turnpike.

If you are interested in good wines, there are now 22 wineries in Oklahoma. A very nice winery located South of Tulsa is the Stone Bluff Cellars. This winery has won a number of medals and placed second out of 600 wineries in a desert wine competition in California. Copy this link for directions and more information:

    www.stonebluffcellars.com/ourwines.html

In Oklahoma City be sure to visit Bricktown and eat some Italian Food at Zio%26#39;s.

If you are spending a weekend in Oklahoma City, and you have never taken a train ride, I would suggest taking AMTRAK%26#39;s Heartland Flyer to Fort Worth, Texas. It arrives in Ft. Worth about noon and you can spend five hours in Ft. Worth and the return trip gets you back to OKC before 10:00PM. The scenery through the Arbuckle Wilderness area is excellent and the commraderie with the passengers is always fun.

Be sure and check the movie schedule at the Omnidome Theatre as they show two great films every day in the OmniMax format. Call 405) 602-OMNI for complete information. And don%26#39;t forget to visit the Cowboy Hall of Fame. John Wayne will be pleased that you did as he gave his gun collection to them.

Briscoeb, what did you end up doing?

I have to say it is hard to look at a whole state and try to figure out what to do. Oklahoma is pretty diversified so it depends on what you are looking for. I do believe it is pretty unique in all of it%26#39;s Native American Culture as well as Will Rogers. Oklahoma abounds in neat natural attractions from Alabaster Caverns, the salt plains where you can dig up one of a kind crystals, and big sand dunes to ORV in the Northwest part of the state to the beautiful Arbuckle mountains in the south to the Ozark area in the northeast. It has alot of cultural things to offer as well and I feel that Tulsa is especially a good choice for many of these...But it all kind of depends on what a person wants from their visit! Oklahoma is a great place to look! But please let us know what you did when you were in OK!!!

    Keystone Park

Anybody out there ever stay at the cabins at Keystone Park?

    Keystone Park

Yes but it was many years ago, though. It%26#39;s a state park, meaning it will be inexpensive but also show signs of limited maintenance over the years. Don%26#39;t expect luxury; but then again, you%26#39;re in a state park @ Lake Keystone, so you%26#39;re probably not looking for luxury. When I stayed there, the cabin was basic, lots of room, a fireplace and a lake view. I%26#39;m sure you can get more info by calling them at 918-865-4991 or Toll Free: (800) 654-8240.

    Keystone Park

Thanks for the info. Much appreciated!

I stayed in one of the 2 bedroom cabins recently. It was better than I expected it to be since it was state owned. The inside of it is pretty much set up like a hotel room. Master bedroom had a queen sized bed, 2nd bedroom had two twin beds. Bathroom had towels, wash cloths, etc, the usual things you find in a hotel room. Even hotel room soap. The kitchen had a decent sized refrigerator, a sink with a bar, a good sized microwave, a small electric stove with oven. There are dishes and just a few pots and pans. A skillet, a large pot and a small one. They had dish soap. I drug a lot of blankets and pillows with me, not needing them, they are furnished. There is a fireplace in the living room, no tv (but you%26#39;re not supposed to be watching tv!). I thought it was a pretty good set up.

The deck overlooked the lake. There are trees between the lake and the cabin, this is not a swimming area. The cabins are setting next to each other, not secluded, but Keystone Lake is beautiful.

    mlcoll,

thanks for the message.i reserved a cabin in july for 73.00 per night.

    Big Cat Sanctuary

Can any one tell me the name of the Big cat Sanctuary thats about an hour south of Oklahoma city? We were there in october and for the life of me i cant remember the name! I do know that its privatly owned, and i have lokked for it on the internet and cant find it! Its a really neat place to see, they have like 2100 big cats, bears, and some other animals...and the staff were awesome!!!

    Big Cat Sanctuary

Are you thinking of GW Exotic Animal in Wynnewood?

    Big Cat Sanctuary

Arbuckle Wilderness is also down that way.

Yeah it was the GW Exotic Animal .... Very Interesting place, we really enjoyed ourselves there, and Jeanette who was our guide was so good to my girls , and how often do you get to play with a baby lion cub!

We were actually going to go to arbuckles and we saw the GW Exotic animals, and after being in there for awhile we decided that we would do arbuckles on the way home from Texas, but we ended up in new mexico on the way home..maybe we will see it next year when were passing through again...We dont have things like this where i come from....just a basic zoo!

    Thanks for the help guys!

Manitobamom, if you are going back next year to Texas you may consider visiting Fossil Rim Wildlife Center in Glen Rose, TX. We are staying there overnight in a couple of weeks. If you like to learn more about exotic animals and see many of them then consider this place. http://www.fossilrim.com/

GW Animal Park was doing a fund raiser here in OKC a few years back and for a fee were taking pictures of people with some of their animals.

I have a photo of me and my daughter with one of their tigers.

    :)

I don%26#39;t know if they still do that or not.

Any info on Sheraton OKC (Dowtown)?

I booked the Sheraton OKC downtown through priceline, but after reading a few reviews, I wonder if I should worry about my bargain. Does anyone out there have any information that I might find helpful? Thank you for helping me out.

Any info on Sheraton OKC (Dowtown)?

Wouldn%26#39;t be my first choice in downtown OKC, but last time I was there it was perfectly OK. For the price they normally charge, you could do better. But if you got a Priceline deal, I wouldn%26#39;t hesitate.

Any info on Sheraton OKC (Dowtown)?

Depending on the priceline price, it%26#39;s probably a good deal.

This is an average hotel property, although in a desireable area. Unless they made some changes (and the reviews would say they haven%26#39;t) I agree with one of the reviewers who said the walls are %26#39;thin%26#39;. But if you make sure you get a room away from the elevators and ice machine it shouldn%26#39;t be a problem.

Don%26#39;t expect any high-end amenities and you won%26#39;t be disappointed.

I got it for $77 a night. Which, I guess is not too bad considering the normal price of $185. I read about the thin walls, and that didn%26#39;t bother me nearly as much as the one who talked about armed guards and not feeling safe. On the good side, I also read that the beds were pretty good. Oh how I dislike the hard motel bed!!!!! At any rate, from your comments, I feel that we will be just fine. Thanks bunches!

For $77, you should be great. All of the downtown/Bricktown hotels usually charge $125 or more and for that much, you%26#39;ll find better. But for $77? I think you%26#39;ll be happy.

    You%26#39;ll see police and security officers wherever you go in the downtown of OKC or most other cities. And their presence is what makes me never feel the least bit squeamish about walking around OKC. I guess it depends on if you look at an officer and see ';danger'; or ';safety'; in your head; I see ';safety.';

I agree with what twoprofs said 100%.

$77/night is a great price. The armed guards are not because the area is dangerous, but a precaution you see a lot these days in busy areas - and downtown OKC is a busy area.

    So, enjoy your stay!!

Don%26#39;t worry about the safety issue. Even at night, this is a very active area and you shouldn%26#39;t be worried at all.

Any Suggestions or pro%26#39;s or Con%26#39;s

    Thank You

    Hotels, Airlines

So you%26#39;ll be flying from Des Moines? Nothing is going to fly direct. The most direct routes for you would probably be Northwest via MSP or, if you can get it, American through STL. Otherwise, you%26#39;ll probably be routed through DFW (busy and huge but doable), DEN (pretty far out of your way), or O%26#39;Hare (which I always avoid if I can). But you know, it%26#39;s not that bad of a drive from Des Moines to OKC if you%26#39;ve got a little extra time.

The tournament will probably be at the Softball Hall of Fame. I can%26#39;t think of anything very close which I would recommend, so you%26#39;ll need a car. The best choices would be in the Downtown/Bricktown (near I-40 %26amp; I-235) area where you%26#39;ll find a number of nice hotels (Courtyard, Residence Inn, Skirvin, Colcord, Renaissance) for the $150 a night neighborhood, or in the Penn Square area (Northwest Expressway %26amp; I-44) area where you%26#39;ll find several options (Courtyard, Amerisuites, Hampton, Sleep) for closer to $100 a night. Bricktown has lots of restaurants and night life; Penn Square has lots of restaurants and shopping.

Give us more specifics. Between us, Modcon and I can do a pretty good job of guiding you.

    Hotels, Airlines

Twoprofs has it right - you will have to travel through another city, and change planes, to get to OKC from Des Moines. The shortest route will take you through St. Louis or Chicago. The other routes will require significantly longer travel time. American Airlines goes through St. Louis or Chicago and on Expedia for a flight leaving 4/17 and returning 4/21 the price is the lowest or the carriers.

And once here you will require a vehicle.

As for hotels, once again I agree with Twoprofs. The Penn Square area (Marriott Waterford, Courtyard OKC Northwest, Wingate Inn) and the area around May Ave and NW Expressway (Oklahoma City Marriott, Comfort Inn at Founder%26#39;s Tower, Crowne Plaza) would probably suit you best. If you could give us an idea of a max price we can probably help more.

Lincoln, NE to San Antonio, TX - Family trip in June by van

We are traveling from Lincoln, NE to San Antonio, TX in June 2008. Any ideas on places to stop or stay along the way. We plan to go to Sea World but beyond that we are open to any family activity. Kids are 7, 11, and 13.

Lincoln, NE to San Antonio, TX - Family trip in June by van

What kind of activities/attractions interest you most?

There is a lot to do in and around OKC. Art/Science/Natural History/Cowboy Museums, our wonderful zoo, Bricktown, and much more. Also, slightly off your route down I-35 you will find Native American attractions, prairie land and other natural areas, and of course old Fort Sill (where Geronimo was held captive and is buried).

And just north of the Texas border there is the Arbuckle Wilderness (a drive through animal park) and Turner Falls Park.

    :)

Lincoln, NE to San Antonio, TX - Family trip in June by van

Do you have a route planned, Kids? You could follow I-35 through Kansas. Or you could use US71 from Kansas City, then I-44 to I-35, which would add northeastern Oklahoma to your route (Tulsa). Or you could use US71 to I-44 to US69, which would miss both Tulsa and OKC in favor of eastern Oklahoma. All are major four lane routes; which did you have in mind? That might affect what we recommend.

Just north of OKC at the route 66 exit off I-35 is the new www.pops66.com restaurant. Fun for kids and just a short detour off the interstate.

    OK old fashioned drug store

Which area is best to stay?

My husband,my 8 year old son and I are planning a short getaway around March 18-20. We are planning to visit the Cowboy Museum, the memorial downtown, possibly the zoo and the omniplex.(Which I didn%26#39;t see anywhere as a place of interest to visit) We were there when my son was a baby, but I don%26#39;t remember a whole lot about the Omniplex. I seem to remember that it was an ok place. My son is interested in space and the solar system. At any rate I would like to know what area would be best for us to stay, and if there are any suggestions of any other activities that we might be interested in.

Which area is best to stay?

Hope you have fun while you are here! As for hotels, what price range are you interested in? That may help narrow down the choices.

Overall, the downtown area is probably one of the better places to stay, but is only close to the Memorial and Bricktown and will run around $200/night or more (After taxes).

No matter where you stay you will end up driving to the other locations - The OKC Zoo http://www.okczoo.com/; Omniplex (which has been rebranded ';Science Museum Oklahoma'; and contains a Aviation and Space exhibit) http://www.omniplex.org/; and the National Cowboy %26amp; Western Heritage Museum http://www.nationalcowboymuseum.org/.

Other places of interest are the Sam Noble Museum of Natural History in Norman:

    http://www.snomnh.ou.edu/

    Oklahoma City Museum of Art:

    http://www.okcmoa.com/

And the 45th Infantry Division Museum:

Which area is best to stay?

Thanks bunches for all the info, modcon. We are sure to have a great time!! As far as motels go, I think that I am going to give priceline a try for your fair city. I did pretty well with them in KC. Thanks again!!

Sounds like you already found most of the great places to go with kids. I think he would really enjoy the Museum Formerly Known as Omniplex. It has a planetarium and an air and space museum, and has added a few things since you were there, including the Gymnastics Hall of Fame and a dome movie theatre. On hotels, if not downtown, I would recommend hotels on the NW side, around Penn Square Mall. There is a courtyard there, a marriott, a crown plaza, a hampton inn, a Country Inn and suites, and many others.

Here%26#39;s my OKC ';must list';, if it helps. Hope you have a great trip!

  • Restaurant for Dinner for 20 People; Bar in Bricktown?

Looking for a restaurant, preferably in Bricktown, that will easily accommodate a dinner party with 20 adults.

Any thoughts on Chelinos? What is the most ';happening'; place in Bricktown?

Is Bricktown only a tourist area?

Where do you recommend people in their 30s go out (Bar or lounge with NO live music, NO country)?

All help is appreciated!!! Thanks so much!

Restaurant for Dinner for 20 People; Bar in Bricktown?

Chelino%26#39;s is one of the larger Bricktown restaurants and will easily accomodate 20 adults. I haven%26#39;t tried it, but I think if you call in advance they%26#39;ll have things ready.

How is Chelino%26#39;s? Overall, I like their food, but I also know people that do not care for it at all. And I have to admit there are some items on their menu I think could be better.

I also believe the Bricktown Brewery would also easily accomodate your group. As will Nonna%26#39;s, Pearl%26#39;s Crabtown and Spaghetti Warehouse Italian Grill.

I can recommend the Brewery and I%26#39;ve heard very good things about Nonna%26#39;s. And while some people like the Spaghetti Warehouse, I%26#39;d rather eat italian elsewhere...

For other restaurants in Bricktown, check out http://www.bricktownokc.com/dining.asp

    That site also includes clubs/bars/lounges.

Sorry, I can%26#39;t help you with the %26#39;happening%26#39; places. But I think most of the bars/lounges have live music on weekends.

Restaurant for Dinner for 20 People; Bar in Bricktown?

If you want Mexican I would go to Abuelo%26#39;s before Chelinos ...call before and make a reservation. Bourbon Street is Cajun style food and it is usually very good. They could also accomadate 20. Middle of the road as far as price.

Another good restaurant is The Mantle. But I think it is too small.

Nonna%26#39;s is very good ..but VERY NICE and EXPENSIVE! But they have a bar/patio upstairs that is fun. You don%26#39;t have to eat there to go to the bar. Mickey Mantles Steakhouse (different from the Mantle) is very nice and they have a nice bar too. There are many bars with music all within walking distance. Just ask at the resturant you end up in. Bricktown is lots of fun locals and tourists alike love it down there.

    Have Fun!

Yeah, it will be hard to find a bar withOUT live music on the weekends. If your looking for a nice, but more laid back place, I%26#39;d try LIT, Drinkz, Red Pin Bowling Lounge, or Tapwerks, depending on your style. Just outside of Bricktown (maybe better for your tastes) are XO (in the Colcord Hotel), the Red Piano (in the Skirvin Hotel), and RED Prime Steak, which has a nice bar area.

Nonna%26#39;s I know has space for large groups, but you%26#39;d want to call ahead. RED Prime Steak in Automobile Alley has space for large groups and is VERY cool but VERY expensive. Abuelo%26#39;s, Crabtown, Bricktown Brewery, Spaghetti Warehouse, Chelino%26#39;s, Toby Keith%26#39;s should all be able to accommidate you, although I don%26#39;t recommend Chelino%26#39;s, especially in your situation. It would be loud and cramped and the food is not that great. There are much better options.

Thanks all! I think I%26#39;ve narrowed it down to Trattoria il Centro, Crabtown and Abuelos. I%26#39;ll check them out when I%26#39;m in town. I realize Trattoria il Centro is downtown, but it seemed to have some pretty good recommendations from this forum.

Bar recommendations are perfect, more loungy vs. live band type places.

    Thanks again!

Trattoria Il Centro is not that far from Bricktown. You won%26#39;t have a problem there.

Crabtown should be the best compromise for food quality and price.

    Good luck!

Those are great choices. I do highly recommend Trattoria. It gets forgotten over in the arts district, but it%26#39;s really really good.

  • Okc first timer

Hi Me %26amp; My Husband (38-43 years old)was going to go to okc for the firs time prob . in may coming from tennessee. hows the weather then? was hoping to stay in bricktown. is the Residence inn good? is it easy to get to from the airport?(Roads easy to drive? lots of lanes etc.? DONT like over 3 lanes of traffic)also how are the roads from OKC To I-40 Toward QUINTON OK?(lots of lanes? difficult to get around?)

ANY HELP WILL BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.

    Thanks!

    Angie

    Okc first timer

Welcome to OKC!!! Glad you are coming.

    To answer your questions:

The weather in May can be somewhat unpredictable, but the average temps are usually in the upper 60%26#39;s/low 70%26#39;s but can move into the 80%26#39;s and even the 90%26#39;s (rarely, though). It is also the wettest month with an average rainfall of a little over 5';. But mostly it is sunny and breezy.

The Residence Inn Bricktown location is brand new. I haven%26#39;t stayed there but it looks very nice from the outside.

Getting there from the airport is very easy. There is one road out of the airport heading north - Meridian Ave. Follow Meridian to Reno Ave and then head east (right turn) and you will drive straight to Bricktown. It%26#39;s a major city street, not a highway. The only hitch is at this time there is construction on Meridian at I-40 on to the Reno intersection. I%26#39;m not sure if it will still be there in May, but I suspect it will. I believe you can avoid that by taking Meridian to SW 29th St and go east on 29th (Right turn), take 29th to May Ave then head North again (left turn) until you reach Reno Ave, then go East (right again). The Residence Inn is right on Reno Ave.

I-40 runs right through the heart of OKC, and you can check the ODOT (Oklalhoma Dept Of Transportation) web site for construction or delay details when you get closer to your visit.

    Have fun!

    Okc first timer

I believe you can take the interstates (I-44 and I-40) from the airport and it%26#39;s never more than 3 lanes of traffic, and the traffic is not bad at all. It%26#39;s not like Dallas or Houston traffic, for example.

The Bricktown Residence Inn is really great from what I%26#39;ve heard. Also, the downtown Courtyard and Sheraton are just a block outside of Bricktown.

Here%26#39;s my ';OKC Must List';. It might help you know what to see and do when you%26#39;re here. Whether should be very nice.

Don%26#39;t worry about driving here. It is easy and for the most part people are friendly!:)

i think you were asking about Clinton? West of OKC? Its all easy.

Renaissance is the nicest then Courtyard by Marriott ..both are in Bricktown/Downtown and there is lots to do down there. Including restaurants.

It is really easy to get around this town it is just spread out. :)

If you like to shop....go to Penn Square. Just ask how to get there. People are glad to help. have fun!

Thanks Everyone for all your help! I really appreciate it! Im going to fly in to OKC then drive to Quinton to see a long lost relative. cant seem to find any hotels in Quinton %26amp; dont want to impose on the relatives. so looks like mcalester is the closest to them.

any other info on OKC, Quinton, %26amp; Mcalester will greatly appreciated!

Thanks again fo your help! it will be our BIG adventure!

    Angie~

WOW! Quinton is so small. Never even heard of it and I have lived in OK for 30 years! :) I looked it up! McAlester would probably give you the most choices. Henreyetta is also a decent bet. There may be something around Lake Eufaula?? Not sure though. Checotah (home of Carrie Underwood) is not too far away either. All of these are small towns with McA being the biggest, but still not BIG! Make sure that when you are in OKC that you stay in Bricktown ...it is fun and the weather should be fine...If there are no tornadoes! hehehe:) you can get around real easy down there.

McAlester would be a great place to stay while visiting your Quinton relatives. While there, I highly recommend you eat at Isle of Capri in Krebs, a suburb of McAlester. Krebs was settled by Italians who came to work on the railroad and has several great restaurants, but I recommend Isle of Capri.

Also, Robber%26#39;s Cave State Park is just south of Quinton a few miles and is one of the best state parks in Oklahoma. Outlaws like Jesse James and Belle Starr used to hide out here in the rocky hills. It%26#39;s beautiful and has some great hiking. I promise you won%26#39;t believe you are in Oklahoma!

Thanks again all this info is really helpful! %26amp; it all sounds really cool! now im trying to find the best airfair to get there. they are so excited to see me as Ive never been to OK. anything you all can help me with I really appreciated it. were thinking maybe late april early may hope the weather is good. Thanks! Angie~

Since you are talking about McAlester, have you thought about goign to Tulsa instead of OKC? It%26#39;s about 40 miles closer to McAlester than is OKC.

    Just a thought...

Flight will probably cost more to Tulsa.

I did think about Tulsa but it is higher to fly from Tn. to tulsa than to okc. thats weird cause tulsa is closer. plus I also wanted to see bricktown %26amp; okc %26amp; we can always go to tulsa with the relatives.

    Thanks again!

    Tulsa hotels

Can any one recomend a hotel near Expo Square in Tulsa? I am planning on attending a horse show there in October. I have looked up reviews for the Emabassy suites as well as other hotels but haven%26#39;t found any thing favorable. I would preffer a hotel with a restaurant/bar or atleast one near by. Thanks.

    Tulsa hotels

There is a Microtel right on the grounds at Expo Square, next to the Big Splash park, of course they don%26#39;t have a resturant or bar. There are a few resturants nearby, nothing fancy. About 3 miles to the south at 51st %26amp; Yale area is a Holiday Inn Select which has a resturant and bar on site, then there is a Baymont Inn also at 51st %26amp; Yale, it is within walking distance to Red Lobster and Outback Steakhouse. Quite a few places to eat nearby, not so sure about the bar scene though. If you want a bit more upscale, there is the Doubletree- Warren Place another mile to the south near 61st %26amp; yale. It has two resturants and a lounge on site. Many more places to eat and drink on 71st as you go east towards Memorial and beyond. Hope this helps.

    Tulsa hotels

Thank you so much you have been very helpful!

The Ambassador Hotel is downtown--but not awfully far from the Expo (about 4 miles, 8-10 min). It has a nice restaurant/bar (The Chalkboard) on the basement level %26amp; is a pleasant change from the usual chain hotels. Its right off the Broken Arrow Expressway (Hwy 51), so you would just take that East to 21st St. %26amp; drive a couple miles to the Expo. There are good reviews on Trip Advisor for it also. There are a couple of other fun restaurants w/bars downtown as well not far from the hotel. Hope this helps!

Thank you linznok. I am going to check out the Ambassador%26#39;s web site. It sounds great!

    linznok,

I looked into the Ambassador and it looks like a lovely hotel. Unfortunatly the price of $209 a night is alittle to high since I will need a room for 11 nights. Thanks

A bit further away from Expo Square is a nice Marriott at 71st and Lewis. Also there is an Adam%26#39;s Mark Hotel downtown and the Doubletree at 61st and Yale is nice too. You might try calling the hotels directly and ask for an extended stay rate. I think there is a Marriott Residence Inn someplace in Tulsa too.

We stayed at the Crowne Plaza in June 2007. Our first choice was the Double Tree but they were booked during that time. I am not sure how close the Crowne Plaza is to Expo Square. We used my husband%26#39;s military discount and it was 66.00 a night. It is a very nice upscale hotel. They do have a restaurant and bar. Also a spa, gift shop, and outside swiming pool.
