Driving from Dallas to Wichita

I am driving from Dallas to Wichita in September. Suggested place to visit within 200 miles of I35 or Route 81 ?

Driving from Dallas to Wichita

Greetings from Oklahoma, tuftysdad. I spent some wonderful time in South Wales a couple of years ago: Tintern Abbey, the Brecon Beacons, Hay-on-Wye. Lovely country; friendly people. I hope to get back there someday soon.

All sorts of interesting places are available near those routes: unique natural sites, great museums (art, natural history), Native American cultural centers, small towns, major universities, Route 66 highlights, etc. So tell us more about what you%26#39;re interested in and I%26#39;m sure we can come up with some suggestions.

Our interest include wildlife, natural beauty and all things ';western';. My wife is disabled so we can%26#39;t do much walking.

I suggest a drive over Highway 1

Given the interests you%26#39;ve expressed, my top recommendations in Oklahoma are the following (listed geographically working your way north from Texas to Kansas):

* Chisholm Trail Heritage Center, Duncan

* Fort Sill National Landmark %26amp; Museum and Geronimo%26#39;s grave, Fort SIll, Lawton

* Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History, Norman

* Oklahoma History Center, OKC

* Oklahoma City Zoo

* National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum, Oklahoma City

* Oklahoma Aquarium, Jenks (Tulsa)

* Philbrook Museum, Tulsa

* Gilcrease Museum, Tulsa

* Tulsa Zoo %26amp; Living Museum

* Woolaroc Ranch and Museum, near Bartlesville

* Tall Grass Prairie Preserve, near Pawhuska

I don%26#39;t think you would be disappointed with any of these attractions. They are all high quality; definitely not tourist traps. Also, be sure to stop by the Oklahoma National Memorial in Oklahoma City, the site of the Murrah Building bombing. It is quite a beautiful and peaceful place.

If you are interested in just some pretty places to visit or drive, in my opinion the prettiest spot in Oklahoma is Beavers Bend State Park in the Southeast corner of the state near Broken Bow. Nearby is the beautiful Highway 1 drive already mentioned from Talihina, OK to Mena, Arkansas. It is famous for fall color, but September will be too early for that.

Also interesting, and a completely different kind of landscape from Beavers Bend, is the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge area around Mt. Scott near Lawton, and farther west, the Quartz Mountain State Park north of Altus. Both of these are in the southwestern part of the state. Also interesting is the Great Salt Plains Wildlife Refuge area in the Northwestern part of the state near Enid.

Have a great trip! Send me a message if you%26#39;d like more details on any of these ideas or have any other questions about our great state.

We have decided to visit the Talimena Drive , Ft Smith, Muskogee ( we are country music fans!), and Tulsa on the way up to my daughter in Wichita. We will take in Oklahoma City on the way back to Dallas. Thanks for your tips.
